Looking at the Latest Machine Vision Standards Updates

Vision standards aim to make machine vision systems easier to use by simplifying the integration process while also driving down costs associated with manufacturing, design, and installation. Standards such as GigE Vision, Camera Link, Camera Link HS, USB3 Vision, and CoaXPress also make machine vision and imaging technology more accessible. They offer a defined model, enabling more effective use of the technology and opening larger potential markets for manufacturers.

Groups from around the world, including the Association for Advancing Automation (A3), the European Machine Vision Association (EMVA), the Japan Industrial Imaging Association (JIIA), the German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA), and the China Machine Vision Union (CMVU), comprise the global standards group G3. Multiple times each year, G3 convenes at International Vision Standards Meetings (IVSM), where a PlugFest is held. The most recent PlugFest, held in fall 2023 in Toronto, Canada, and hosted by Teledyne DALSA and A3, saw several developments related to Camera Link HS (CLHS) and GigE Vision. On October 17, the following products were certified as compliant to the corresponding standard:

2024 Vision Standards Meetings

This year, the G3 meets at the Spring IVSM in Tokyo, hosted by JIIA the week of April 15. The agenda covers GigE Vision, USB3 Vision, and CoaXPress, as well as other G3 standards. Later in the year, in October, the G3 meets in Europe for the Fall IVSM hosted by VDMA, with details yet to be released. Those in the machine vision and automation space can also learn about the latest standards at the International Vision Standards booth at Automate 2024, which takes place May 6–9 in Chicago.
