SinceVision Solves Photon Starvation at 1.1 Million FPS with the New SH8 Series High-Speed Camera

In the world of extreme transient imaging, speed is only half the battle. The real enemy is the dark. When frame rates push into the millions and exposure times drop to mere nanoseconds, conventional image sensors simply cannot capture enough photons to create a usable image. SinceVision is tackling this physical bottleneck head-on with the new SH8 Series camera, an industrial imaging powerhouse that recently debuted at VISION 2026 in Stuttgart.

The fundamental breakthrough of the SH8 Series lies in its architecture. SinceVision engineered the system around a massive 20 μm back-illuminated (BSI) sensor. By flipping the traditional sensor structure and relocating the metal interconnect layer behind the photodiodes, the camera effectively clears the path for incoming light. This structural shift yields an EMVA 1288-verified peak quantum efficiency (QE) of over 85%, allowing the camera to pull in critical visual data across a broad 250 nm to 1050 nm spectral range (UV to NIR).

"We built the SH8 series to eliminate the compromises researchers face in extreme transient events," explained Ethan Fu, Product Manager of High-Speed Cameras at SinceVision. "Traditional sensors often encounter obstacles in application scenarios in low light and ultraviolet bands. SH8 breaks this limit."

For sheer velocity, the camera tops out at a staggering 1,100,000 frames per second with a minimum exposure time of just 150 nanoseconds—fast enough to freeze shock waves, plasma flows, or crack propagation without motion blur. At its native 1280×1024 resolution, the system delivers a continuous 30,000 fps.

To push low-light limits even further, SinceVision implemented an advanced 2×2 pixel binning mode. By merging four adjacent pixels into a single readout, the SH8 quadruples its light-sensing area. This allows the camera to hit 120,000 fps at 640×512 resolution, significantly boosting the signal-to-noise ratio and delivering clean imagery free of the noise artifacts that typically plague high-speed captures.

Capturing at these speeds generates a massive data avalanche, creating a secondary challenge for industrial integrators: safe offload. To prevent data loss during sudden power failures in rigorous testing environments, the SH8 is equipped with 8TB of built-in non-volatile storage. For high-volume shoots, this capacity is hot-swappable and expandable up to 15.36TB.

The SH8 Series is positioned to become a vital diagnostic tool in micro-engineering for observing MEMS dynamics, biomechanics, aerospace fuel spray analysis, and high-voltage electrical discharge tracking. By eliminating the historical compromise between blistering speed and low-light image quality, SinceVision is giving integrators and researchers a much clearer window into the microsecond mechanics that drive modern industrial R&D.
